LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros.' superhero film "Birds of Prey" took the top spot at the North American box office, taking in 33.25 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend.

The film debuted with an estimated 48 million dollars from 78 overseas markets this weekend for a global cume of 81.3 million dollars, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

Based on DC Comics characters Harley Quinn and famous comic book team Birds of Prey, "Birds of Prey" is the 8th film in the DC Extended Universe and a follow-up to 2016's superhero film "Suicide Squad." The film follows a fictional female character Harley Quinn who joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

Margot Robbie returns as Quinn in "Birds of Prey" by Chinese-American director Cathy Yan, who is known as the first Asian woman to direct a major Hollywood studio superhero movie.

"Birds of Prey" receives a "B+" rating from moviegoers on CinemaScore and holds an approval rating of 80 percent on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes to date.

Sony's action comedy "Bad Boys For Life" moved to second place after three consecutive weekends as box office champ, adding 12 million dollars in its 4th weekend for a North American cume of 166.32 million dollars through Sunday.

"Bad Boys for Life" is the third installment in the hugely successful Bad Boys franchise, the sequel to "Bad Boys 2" and 1995's "Bad Boys." Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the film stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in their roles as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett as they are back together for one last ride.

Universal's World War I epic "1917" came in third with 9 million dollars in its 7th weekend, pushing its North American total to 132.5 million dollars for a global cume of 287.4 million dollars through Sunday.

Directed and co-written by Sam Mendes, the Oscar-winning director of "American Beauty" and James Bond film "Skyfall," the film chronicles the story of two young British soldiers during World War I who are given a seemingly impossible mission, racing against time to cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on 1,600 soldiers.

Universal's fantasy adventure film "Dolittle" landed in 4th with 6.66 million dollars in its 4th weekend for a North American cume of 64 million dollars.

Directed by Stephen Gaghan and starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, the film is a reboot of the Doctor Dolittle films. The plot follows the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle, a famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria's England, who is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure for Queen Victoria, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and encounters wondrous creatures.

Sony's fantasy adventure comedy film "Jumanji: The Next Level" finished 5th with 5.53 million dollars in its 9th weekend in North America. The film has grossed 298.4 million dollars in North America for a worldwide total of 768 million dollars.

Directed by Jake Kasdan and based on the book "Jumanji" by Chris Van Allsburg, the film, starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan, is the second sequel to "Jumanji" in 1995, following "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" in 2017.
