PHNOM PENH, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has registered a total of 9,065 electric cars or electric vehicle (EVs) as of 2025, according to a Ministry of Public Works and Transport's report on Wednesday.

In addition, the Southeast Asian country has also recorded 3,203 electric motorcycles and 700 electric three-wheelers, the report said.

The three most popular EV brands in the kingdom are China's BYD, Japan's Toyota, and America's Tesla.

Phan Rim, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said using EVs saves on fuel costs and is environment-friendly as EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions.

"EVs have been gaining popularity in Cambodia, and the country aims to increase the number of electric cars to 30,000 by 2030," he told Xinhua. "Using EVs has significantly contributed to reducing the impact of carbon dioxide emitted from petrol-powered vehicles."

Thong Mengdavid, deputy director at the China-ASEAN Studies Center of the Cambodia University of Technology and Science, observed that Chinese EV brands such as BYD and GAC are popular in Cambodia.

"This trend signals not only a shift in consumer preferences toward greener mobility, but also deeper structural changes," he told Xinhua.

"Expanded EV charging infrastructure and ambitious national electrification goals are creating conditions that support sustained growth in Cambodia's EV market over the medium to long term," Mengdavid added. ■
