JAKARTA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Six people have been injured and dozens of houses and buildings destroyed after a shallow earthquake struck East Java province of Indonesia on Wednesday night, an official said on Thursday.

A 4.8 magnitude quake with the depth at 12 km and epicenter of 6-km northeast Sumenep struck at 8:06 p.m. Jakarta time (1306 GMT), according the meteorology and geophysics agency.

A total of 77 houses, two mosques and two school buildings have been damaged in several villages of Batu Putih sub-district in Sumenep district, the official told Xinhua.

Risk assessment of the impacts of the quake is underway.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it is situated on a vulnerable quake-stricken territory called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
